Technically, one's first visit would use the default 'standard' 
display settings.  What causes a lot of folk's issues is making a 
visit 'after' a previous visit following a search engine link that 
had the display set to another value (now called 'Outline' or 
Linear+) .. this 'selection is stored within the cookie the page 
provides, thusly impacting future visits to the Forum.

As far as the IPS software goes, your 'extra' is actually 
duplicating the "p=xxxx" item as far as the 'standard' view goes. 
Granted it 'forces' a view of the specific post seen in the 
'other-than-standard views, but actually, almost all users use the 
'standard' display.  Those that run into the scenario above usually 
panic a bit when the view changes (and they know not why)
