You can't "hijack" something which hasn't, yet, been claimed. However, your
point is clear; don't search for a domain unless you actually intend to
purchase it on the spot. Domain squatters exist who will try to grab it out
from under you in hopes of selling it to you at a profit to them.

I once saw the '.com' version of my domain get snatched, and held briefly by
a domain squatter. Because I have no intent to buy the '.com' version of my
'.net' domain, I never bothered to contact the squatter. It appears to be
available again, so those squatters don't hold on to them forever, just long
enough to see if their speculation pans out.
