Actually email spam causes some of the internet to become the Vast 
Wasteland, however, what normally happens is that people get email addresses 
that are not spammed, and the spammers are left with the prospect of picking 
that 1 in 1,000,000 dummy who hasn't yet got a clue as to what a spammer 
is/does.

It's not just webpages being hijacked, it's also millions of compromised 
computers sending spam that are being hijacked, and while that situation is 
allowed to continue through the ISP/government inaction or lack of action 
that allows it to continue, spammers will continue to spam people with them. 
However, if there is a shift towards antihijacking measures and 
dezombification of hijacked computers, we may see the spammers move towards 
other methods of spamming.
