Spam abuse replies are as effective as delivery notices (i.e., when you
send e-mail with a delivery receipt, not a read receipt, and *if* the
receiving mail server bothers to send back a delivery notice). They're
just canned responses that never indicate that anyone actually saw them
(other than you). I don't consider them spam but I do consider them
fluff e-mail just choking up more bandwidth and disk space. After all,
do you think those canned responses from abuse reports sent to Google
Groups really mean Google is white hat? Yeah, right. Canned responses
are just that. They don't change the hat color at all. Do you also
feel less anxious because a cross-walk button exists that you can press
but isn't connected to anything? Those that use the canned responses
realize they are nothing more than pacifiers. Pacifiers are for the
easily distracted.
