It was determined 8 weeks ago that she was pregnant and qualified for Medicaid. Her application for OB/GYN support has been approved (base on my raising holy h*ll). She is to pick you the documents to see a doctor tomorrow with a first appointment 7 weeks out. Thus no prenatal care for the most critical part of the pregnancy. The explanation is cut backs in funding. So now comes a person with six kids that has under taken an elective implantation and has elected, base on televised comments of the providers, to carry the 8 unit pregnancy apparently against medical advice. Self pay for prenatal care and delivery is on the order of $15K (I'm told ~$5K at insurance rates) 8 Kids @ $400K = ~ $3M. Just how many others like my young friends could be treated for $3M? Additionally I find it offensive that the medical providers are falling all over themselves for bragging rights to care for this lady when the official attitude on other at risk pregnancy is 'go to the ER'. BTW ER's are notoriety ill trained and equipped to deal with a pregnancy problems. As others here have noted previously uninsured = untreated. Some crazy shit. Years back my Dad cleaned out his attic, IIRC when he remarried a few years after my mom died. She had saved all these little books and poems and ceramic projects that we created in elementary school (no report cards). It was pretty cool to look at the stuff and read what some "other" person wrote 35-40 years ago. What state? Why didn't they get COBRA coverage? Not offered by their workplace? Are businesses required to offer it to folks that lose their jobs? I recently looked at what I can do when I lose my COBRA coverage in June, assuming I'm not back at work by then. MD has a health insurance plan "of last resort", and also has a similar one for car insurance, for individuals unable to obtain commercial insurance. Nobody is going to take me on with all of my pre-existing conditions. The premiums are high, of course, but not as bad as I thought, pretty close to what I'm paying right now, although the scrip med benefits are way, way worse. I need to wade through all the documents again, I did see something about pre-existing conditions not being covered for the first six months (what the hell sense does that make for a last resort state health plan?!?), but I thought I saw something about losing COBRA coverage as being a ticket out of the 6 month wait. And if I don't get that, you can pay some extra cash to waive the 6 month wait. My brain has been fried for the last few days -- in the final step in recovering from my basement flood I sprayed this black rubberized water proofing stuff on the bottom of my stereo cabinet to prevent any damage from another flood (I had to rebuild the base of the cabinet that was ruined from being submerged, had naked wood that needed some kind of protection). Did it on Friday night. I duly put on my rubber gloves and respirator, opened the basement casement window, started the basement exhaust vent system, and sprayed away. Only problem was I was spraying close to the stairs, and I had forgotten to close the door at the top of the stairs and turn off the furnace to prevent air circulating from the basement to upstairs. As a result, the level of fumes upstairs was pretty high and nasty. I woke up Saturday at 1:00 pm with every muscle and joint in my body aching the worst they have in a LONG time, and my eyesight and brain function were horrible. I'm feeling semi-normal right now (had a bad afternoon though), guess the toxins from the fumes have mostly been eliminated from my body by now. My lungs, elbows, and knees still hurt when I woke up today, but just a little bit....I'm never going to use that stuff again, even though it's a great product. Damn, it's hard to remember all the preventive measures I have to take these days to prevent me from poisoning myself! I used that exact same product on something else about 4-5 months ago without any type of safety precautions and my body tolerated it just fine. Weird, ain't it? Oh no, he's scared to death of me, it even got to the point that if he was above me in the attic space, and heard me open my door (hinges squeak), he'd bolt out of there before I could get outside. Last night I fooled him, I sprayed the hinges with WD 40 (to the rescue!) Bwawhahhhhh......he was rather surprised, to say the least. Now they've rigged the trap so it won't spring and baited, they're going to see if he'll eat in there and then set the trap for real. Message-ID: Saw my orthopod this afternoon to finally get that damn Baker's cyst behind my knee drained, it never went away after my knee surgery last March. It would hurt like hell sometimes after I'd been on my feet for a while, like from running errands/shopping for several hours straight. He initially wouldn't drain it, saying it would go away on it's own after the knee healed. Wrongo! Imagine a big 75 CC syringe, about 5-6" long, 1" or so in diameter....then imagine it filled with 70 CC's of a yucky yellowish fluid. That's how much fluid he sucked out of the cyst! From the original MRI, the cyst was measured to be roughly 6 cm long, 3 cm by 2 cm around, which is 36 CCs -- and he pulled out almost twice that, which means the damn thing actually got bigger *after* the surgery. It sure felt bigger, but it's size varied over time. To say I was shocked when I saw that nearly filled syringe would be putting it mildly......now I have to hope it doesn't come back. He's testing the fluid for Lyme again (he's the guy who originally diagnosed me) so we can see if the levels of antibodies (titres) have changed since my original Western Blot test. I also had him look at my left elbow, which is on the warpath again. I had finally gotten rid of my constant back/neck/shoulder/elbow/wrist problems when I started working with a different therapist at the clinic I go to about 1 1/2 months ago, she uses some not-well-known techniques like something called "Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT)" and another one called Bio-Valence therapy. Those treatments, combined with acupuncture and Bowen therapy (another non-western sort of PT), had FINALLY cured me of all that pain that started after I fell of that damn step stool in the basement many months ago. But she quit and moved to another clinic 3 weeks ago, almost an hour's drive from my house. My back muscles slowly started aching again, and my left elbow and right wrist hurt so badly that some days I have trouble putting shoes and socks on. I've made an appt. to go see her, but in the meantime I asked my ortho for a little bit of help for when the pain is too much for me to take. He gave me a scrip for some 5 mg oxycodone, but I couldn't get it filled -- for some reason oxycodone is suddenly unavailable for sale. We called 2 other pharmacies, Rite-Aid and CVS (I first went to the one right next door to his office), but no one had any. So he rewrote the scrip for 10 mg, and I got the last 11 pills that the pharmacy had left. I hope none of y'all out there (FP? JohnL's SO?) depend on taking oxycodone for pain management, because it appears that there is none to be had anywhere in the country and no one seems to know why. Maybe the feds shut down production because of all the abuse and crime that is attached to that drug? I haven't gargled it yet, but something really weird is going on. For folks like me who can't take pain meds with tylenol in them because my liver is under enough stress right now from the anti-toxin drugs I'm taking, they're in for a bad future....there's nothing on the market that can replace oxycodone exept for morphine or demerol, and demerol is the only pain med I've ever taken that was capable of truly scrambling my brain to the point where I would not/could not drive while taking it. In other words, Demerol is the only pain med that scares me, although it works wonderfully well. Do you have any seriously heavy duty leather gloves to wear while doing that? Or chain mail gloves like shark hunters wear, LOL? I'm sure you don't want to go thru rabies treatments, right? I think you'd be better served by find something heavy like a log or a big chunk of lumber to push up against the trap door rather than risk trying to secure the door with zip-ties. He could chew thru those in seconds anyway, you'd have to wire it shut with some pretty heavy gauge wire instead. Best off blocking the door any way you can. I wonder how they would spin that.. a flashback scene maybe, where kara sees something that they didn't see on the cylon planet?, and what about the star configuration being an exact match on the cylon planet? Even a 180 in space wouldn't make the stars line up like they did in the temple... and what about the cheif finding the place he died on the Cylon Planet?, the final 5 have been to earth.... and next week Saul's wife gets reborn?, must be a rouge resurrection ship running around out there somewhere?, or was there just a special one for the final 5? I have to give it to the writers though, they've a whole lot of ways they could go with it at this point.... unless.... we find out that in the end, "We're ALL Cylons".... LOL, like i said, I can't hardly wait man... Well keep in mind that none of them really know what "Earth" looks like. They don't know the shape of the continents or the exact makeup of the solar system. Who's to say that the earth they've been looking for this whole time was the Cylon colony and OUR earth has been forgotten even by the ancients? > > and next week Saul's wife gets reborn?, must be a rouge resurrection ship > running around out there somewhere?, or was there just a special one for the > final 5? Or she was resurrected on Earth. :-P > > I have to give it to the writers though, they've a whole lot of ways they > could go with it at this point.... Indeed, which is why they went out of their way to avoid showing us any defining landmasses on the Cylon planet. Had they shown us continents, it would have locked them into a specific storyline. Either it's our earth or it's not. By not showing us any definite proof, they can keep us guessing. But now that they've proven it's a Cylon world, it stands to reason that OUR earth is still out there...but they can save the surprise of showing us until the final episodes. :) > > unless.... we find out that in the end, "We're ALL Cylons".... > I believe that's the case. They made a big deal about cycles and history repeating itself. Imagine the following scenario, which I find to be most probable. 1. Humans evolve on OUR earth. 2. Humans create the first Cylons. 3. For some reason (most likely war), Cylons and Humans abandon Earth. Humans go to Kobol, Cylons go to a new world they name Earth...after the original homeworld. 4. 2000 years ago, the war re-ignites. It's stated that the Cylon world was nuked 2000 years ago, and it's also stated that Kobol suffered a "blaze" that forced the Humans to leave the planet 2000 years ago. Coincidence? I think not. :) 5. The Humans left ruined Kobol to form the 12 colonies. The Cylons left ruined Earth to parts not yet revealed. Some of them (the final five) joined the Humans in the 12 colonies. 6. The colonies create new versions of Cylons. 7. We all know what happens next. :-P 8. The surviving Humans and the rebel Cylons find OUR earth and eventually settle there to form a single society. This series of events perfectly explains the "cycle" of things that was so often talked about as the show progressed. It also leaves open the possibility that not all Humans ended up in the 12 colonies, not all Cylons went to join them after their world was nuked, and that they could all still be out there...which leaves open an explanation as to what happened with Kara, and how Saul's wife was resurrected. A) They were good to me when I used them. Fair, honest, accurate B) But I have dropped them! Just on PRICE reasons. C) Here is what I use: -1- For comparative Rx Pricing, go to http://www.drx.com -2- I am a BIG fax on http://www.hocks.com I use them a LOT for non-prescription items. Most of the times, their prices CANNOT be beat. They have added value for me, as I can pick up locally, For example 210 count of CosaminDS.. retail $79.99... their price.. $69.99 -3- Have you checked with wally-world? They have all sorts of generics for a great prices. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/catalog.gsp?cat=546834 -3- For non-prescrition items, I have become a big fan of Vitacost http://www.vitacost.com Flat rate shipping ($4.95 for any shipment). Also prices are great at least for me.. for example, I use Source Naturals Boswellia 100 ct 262 mcg... Locally it is $19.95 /100 ... They have it for $9.95. Same product, but even 'fresher' than local, Hope this helps... I guess "thoughts" wasn't really what I was > looking > for - I was hoping that someone had tried them and that they were at least > OK to deal with. Anyone? Depends on what you're purchasing, I think....I checked on one scrip med I take and drugstore.com's price was 8% higher than Walgreen's online store, assuming no health insurance involved. But Walgreen online can be a royal PITA to deal with sometimes, especially for class-2 or class-3 drugs. Takes them a long time to process those orders. Have you taken a look at Vitacost.com? Here's one thing I take for my arthritic big toes, this price can't be beat even when you include shipping costs ($4.95): http://www.vitacost.com/Doctors-Best-Best-MSM Another comparison shows Vitacost prices destroy drugstore.com: http://www.vitacost.com/NSI-CoQ10-100-mg-60-Capsules vs. http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=156569&catid=33633 If'n you don't care to look those links, they're price comparisons for COQ10, another supplement I take, both regularly list for $33 for 60 100mg soft-gelcaps, Vitacost price is $6.69 and Drugstore.com is a whopping $23.44! Vitacost is _not_ a pharmacy though, so I point you back to Walgreens if you need scrip meds. Or there's another mail order place I used to use....darnit, what's the name of that place......Allscrips? Something like that. Gargle it if you want. I need to remember to use Vitacost more often, I typically wait too long to order refills and end up buying this kind of stuff at the VitaminShoppe, but even the brick'n'mortar store prices there are competive vs. drugstore.com. I think you can do much better than that place for online drug/supplement shopping. I'll check the others to see what the what is! Keep checking for generics.... many go generic each month.... Also, if you can't find generic, look carefully at what the medicine is... For example, let's call them drugA and drugB.... If the buy the new 'combo' drug DrugADrugB, there is NO generic, but if you gets scripts for drugA and drugB separately, there are generics for each!! One of them I think is Caduet, which is heavily advertised... Caduet has NO generic, but is composed of amlodipine / atorvastatin (I forget the brands..) then you have generics. It is all in how the script is written... Another site to look at is http://luckyvitamin.com . I did business with them once, when they had an item that Vitacost was out of. Folks that have never lived without scrip insurance would jump out of the chairs in shock if they ever looked around and found out how much the pharmaceutical companies charge for their name brand drugs, it's insane. Even generics are incredibly expensive without insurance, as your above scenario shows. Got a question for you though -- you said "you got it changed to generic" -- does that mean you had to call the doc and get a new scrip? At my pharmacy (CVS) they ask you if you'll accept a generic if one exists, thte doc doesn't have to get involved unless he specifically writes on the scrip "no substitutions". Generics are not perfect, a lot of folks don't realize that. There are some I'm aware of that, because of complicated mfg processes, do not function as well as the name brand drug. Be careful about that though -- the new "combo" drug _must_ function differently and significantly better than the combo of the two generics to get approved as a new drug by the FDA. I know this because I own some stock in a little biotech called Pozen, it teamed up with GlaxoSmithKline to combine the soon-going-to-generic migraine drug Imitrex with naproxen sodium (Aleve) for rapid relief from migraines. The new drug is called Treximet and was approved for sale about 6 months ago. Pozen owns the patents for a technology for making drugs dissolve and be absorbed very rapidly, leading to faster and longer lasting relief. While the new drug was awaiting approval, the Pozen Yahoo finance messageboard was full of bashers claiming that only an idiot would pay for a non-generic scrip drug when they could combine OTC Aleve with a generic scrip for Imitrex, but all the studies the FDA requires for new drug approval showed that Treximet provided migraine relief up to 2 hours faster than combining the two generics, all because of that patented rapid absorption technology. Dunno if you've ever suffered from a migraine, but those 2 hours could mean the difference between someone having to leave work in immense pain and being able to stay at work. And you still need to get a scrip for generic Imitrex anyway, so you don't save on a visit to the doctor. The cost of the new combo pill is roughly $3/dose higher than combining the two generics, so you're not saving a ton of money in any case. Pozen is currently working on several other combo drugs. Don't forget that for the elderly, in particular, that for those taking multiple doses of different drugs every day the simple fact of only having to take one pill vs. two can greatly ease their confusion, besides lessening the number of pill bottles littering their kitchen counter. My point is that any new scrip combo drug MUST be a much better drug than simply combining two generics to get FDA approval. We all want faster and better results, right? P.S. I called my pharmacy today to find out whether they had heard anything official about why production of all sizes of oxycodone had been stopped. They got a FAX this morning that said that the FDA had shut down all oxycodone production for exceeding the annual number of doses allowed to be produced over a calendar year -- an obvious sign that rogue doctors filling unecessary scrips for the drug for abusers (hello Rush! ;-) and black market resellers had overwhelmed the system. No new oxycodone production will be allowed until March 2009 for the 5 mg pill, and the 10 mg pill cannot restart mfg'ing until April. That is scary, man. It's > just speed and speed never cost that much on the street! XR is WAY more than that for a 30 day scrip at non-insurance levels. And it's not just "speed", it affects several neuro-transmitter pathways in the brain. It clears up my brain fog and memory problems. I certainly wish I didn't have to take it as it suppresses my appetite, but it works as a bandaid until we can find out what the real problem is....should get my heavy metal toxin test results back soon, they cause the exact issues I'm dealing with as far as brain function. They had better be positive, because I had 70 cc's of fluid drained my my knee cyst (which has since refilled about 50%) and the Western blot turned up negative for the synovial fluid he drained. I find that strange, I thought once you tested positive that you'd always test positive for lyme antibodies for the rest of your life. Maybe the titres were too small to be considered "positive"....have to talk to the ortho and get the test results to my lyme doc to understand what they mean. But we've suspected for quite some time that something besides lyme was causing my remaining symptoms, so it kind of makes sense. God help me if UNUM finds out about that test...... Shaving your head and donating hair are two almost unrelated issues. Donated hair needs to be long and braided; head shaving is typically done on a sheared head. braiding hair and shaving a head barely come under the same 'heading' -- so to speak. > The first link that comes up in a search appears to be the same every > time: http://www.locksoflove.org/ The first link isn't necessarily the best one. I learned more at the second and subsequent links. eg http://www.squidoo.com/donateyourhair > And yet... And yet they won't give you a value on your donation. If you want to figure out how much hair is worth, you should visit a 'hair trader' site where hair is bought and sold. See below. > Seems to me that they must not be legit if they wont give you a receipt > saying what your donation is worth. There are plenty of people, celebrities and otherwise who are busy donating their hair to the cause of making wigs for cancer treatment 'victims' without being provided such receipts. > It doesn't cost them anything to > do so and yet they refuse. There's seriously something not right, > there. I think maybe you are (still) too accustomed to your hair having value to you to be comfortable enough to donate it 'freely'. To me, the biggest pain/inconvenience would be the braiding part. The only hair the donation sites want is long hair braided, ie if it isn't long enough, they don't even want it. 8-10" hair braided probably isn't going to be happening all over your head. locksoflove has a 10" minimum; Pantene 8". It depends on what floats your boat. I suspect that you might want to interact with your friends who are (going to be) commenting on your now bald head which was previously adorned with a long mane and you are going to be wanting to say to them that you donated it to a good cause and that your wonderful hair was worth all of these $$ that you donated to the cause. I can't imagine how you figger that the donation is going to be worth anything from a tax perspective, so it is only going to be (worth something) for the telling of the story to friends. > Anyone with the inside scoop??? Message-ID: I talked to my lyme doc today, he got the results of my heavy metal poison test results back. My levels of lead and nickel were elevated, as were others (lead was the highest), although not at levels high enough that would require immediate critical treatment, and also not high enough to be able to change my health diagnosis. The test is a very mild form of chelation therapy (the treatment that removes the toxins from your body), and it managed to jigger loose just enough of the metals to be found at measurable levels in my urine. My doc says if he would have hit me harder with the chelation drugs the levels would likely have been much higher, but it's very dangerous to stir things up by slamming someone with a big dose of those drugs. As it was, I was sick for 2 days after taking the test. I'm not surprised that he found nickel based on my past work history of welding stainless steel without proper ventilation, but the lead was a surprise. Nickel inhalation, which can/will occur while welding stainless steel, primarily causes sinus problems (something I've always blamed on allergies) and we all know what lead does to the brain. I was exposed to inhaling lead fumes multiple times while working at my last job. All of the stainless steel heat pipes I designed and helped build for various Hubble instruments over the years used a lead/tin/nickel plating on the stainless steel that enables you to solder copper or aluminum interface plates at the ends where the heat source and heat sink are located. The aluminum interface plates were also coated with the same lead/tin/nickel surface treatment, and the solder we used was 50/50 lead/tin. I always helped the technicians solder these plates to the heat pipes because it's the most critical stage of fabrication, if they aren't soldering in place to exacting tolerances they wouldn't correctly attach to the instrument components they were meant to help cool. Most of these heat pipes were directly bolted to the CCD camera heat sinks in the instruments, which multiplies the criticality by a factor of ten because you cannot induce ANY stress into the camera interface or you will make it unable to maintain focus due to thermal expansion/contraction stresses caused by the impoper alignment of the heat pipe/camera interface. Until my final year and a half at work, during which I helped solder 6 pairs of these of heat pipes, there was no ventilation system of any kind in the soldering room. I believe that the lead is most likely contributing to my remaining neurological issues, if not being the direct cause of my problems, because heavy metals (like nickel), besides directly killing cells on contact, also get "stuck" in places they don't belong and prevent the normal cellular chemical processes in your body from occurring. It's hard to say how much of the lyme toxins remain in my system, if any, because there is no test to measure the toxin levels short doing a tissue biopsy (no thanks, my liver would prefer to be left alone!) I also talked to my UNUM rep this afternoon for almost an hour, about half of which consisted of me bitching about the distortions and misinterpretations of various conversations held between me, UNUM, and my doctors. I attempted to record the conversation to prevent future "errors" from occurring, but he said that if I didn't turn off the tape recorder he was going to hang up, that UNUM will not allow phone conversations between their reps and their clients to be recorded. Gee, I wonder why? Now the semi-good news. They are still evaluating my claim based on the latest documentation they've received from everyone treating me (they perform a review every 3 months), and the decision to cut off my benefits in March has not been made. He said if that were to happen that they inform their clients by calling them on the phone immediately after the decision is made. I explained to him that I have been slowly improving since starting chelation therapy for lyme toxins last November with the drug CSM -- it (luckily) happens to remove heavy metals as well as biologically produced toxins, like what lyme disease leaves behind after you kill the buggers off. I'm currently taking slightly double my initial dose, and the longer I take it, the fewer toxins will remain in my body, allowing me to increase my dosage faster as the treatment progresses. I just need to continue to avoid exposure to chemicals like those contained in spray paint fumes, which I have a very strong reaction to, causing a severe aggravation of my symptoms. For me, exposure to certain chemicals basically means a lot of pain and misery and a wasted week of recovery time. UNUM is sending me to a "clinic to be determined" to be evaluated for both my current physical and mental capabilities to help them make their decision on my case. From what my UNUM rep told me, they are basically going to run a series of tests to establish a baseline, then work me hard the first day, both physically and mentally, then re-run the tests at the end of the session to see if the results change. They'll also have me come back the next morning to run the tests again to see if I have any problems caused by the "stress test" the day prior. If they work me hard enough, I should be a basket case the next day, because that's what typically happens when I overdo it around the house or yard. I *could* encourage a positive reaction (meaning my physical health/cognitive functions are worse) by, hmmm......breathing in some paint fumes the evening after the first day of testing.....or working on the computer until the wee hours of the morning......but I don't want to make myself feel any worse than I know I'm going to be.....no need to torture myself even more than what they're apparently going to do to me. With any luck, my schedule and the schedule of whatever local clinic UNUM sends me to (and they have to find one first) won't match up for a few weeks, something I'm sure can be arranged ;-) That nearly guarantees me at minimum a paycheck for April, regardless of the test results. One good thing (for me) about UNUM is that they move very slowly, just like a regular huge corporation. Goddamn, I found so much information I don't even know where to start....... http://www.cis.org/articles/2004/fiscalrelease.html WASHINGTON (August 25, 2004) ? A new study from the Center for Immigration Studies is one of the first to estimate the impact of illegal immigration on the federal budget. Based on Census Bureau data, the study estimates that households headed by illegal aliens used $10 billion more in government services than they paid in taxes in 2002. These figures are only for the federal government; costs at the state and local level are also likely to be significant. The study also finds that if illegals were given amnesty, the fiscal deficit at the federal level would grow to nearly $29 billion. Among the findings: Illegal alien households are estimated to use $2,700 a year more in services than they pay in taxes, creating a total fiscal burden of nearly $10.4 billion on the federal budget in 2002. * Among the largest federal costs: Medicaid ($2.5 billion); treatment for the uninsured ($2.2 billion); food assistance programs ($1.9 billion); the federal prison and court systems ($1.6 billion); and federal aid to schools ($1.4 billion). * If illegal aliens were legalized and began to pay taxes and use services like legal immigrants with the same education levels, the estimated annual fiscal deficit at the federal level would increase from $2,700 per household to nearly $7,700, for a total federal deficit of $29 billion. http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2004/12/06/news/top_stories/19_56_5812_5_04.txt California's nearly 3 million illegal immigrants cost taxpayers nearly $9 billion each year, according to a new report released last week by the Federation for American Immigration Reform, a Washington, D.C.-based group that promotes stricter immigration policies. ****(that's just in 2004, BTW)**** Educating the children of illegal immigrants is the largest cost, estimated at $7.7 billion each year, according to the report. Medical care for illegal immigrants and incarceration of those who have committed crimes are the next two largest expenses measured in the study, the author said. I'll just post snippets from one report (full report can be found at http://www.esrresearch.com/Rubensteinreport.pdf ) As of 2006, California contained greater than 25% of the total illegal alien population within the U.S. Many of these illegals concentrate in Los Angeles. New statistics from the Department of Public Social Services reveal that illegal aliens and their families in Los Angeles County collected over $37 million in welfare and food stamp allocations in November 2007 ? up $3 million dollars from September. Twenty five percent of the all welfare and food stamps benefits are going directly to the children of illegal aliens. Illegals collected over $20 million in welfare assistance for November 2007 and over $16 million in monthly food stamp allocations for a projected annual cost of $444 million. ?This new information shows an alarming increase in the devastating impact Illegal immigration continues to have on Los Angeles County taxpayers,? said Antonovich, LA County Supervisor. ?With $220 million for public safety, $400 million for healthcare, and $444 million in welfare allocations, the total cost for illegal immigrants to County taxpayers far exceeds $1 billion a year ? not including the millions of dollars for education.? Just keep in mind that the $37 million a month is for only one county in one state and is only welfare and foodstamp benefits. It doesn?t include hospital care, education, fraud, wage depression, crime, depreciation of housing values, the portion of bad loans given to illegal aliens by banks, insurance costs and the myriad of other burdensome expenses that illegal aliens put on the backs of American citizens. There are 29 sanctuary cities in California and because of that there should be little wonder why so many illegal aliens stay in this state. They basically operate with impunity and even if they get arrested for a serious crime there is little chance of them being deported. They can sign up for welfare and food stamps with no questions asked and the hospitals provide them with free care as long as there are still emergency rooms that can?t turn them away for lack of funds. All things considered, California has rolled out the welcome mat for them. Is there any wonder that California is right now in a fiscal crisis emergency with a budget deficit greater than $14 billion and growing? Reliable estimates calculate illegal aliens cost the state $10.5 billion each year! So what?s Schwarzenegger?s solution? A 10 percent across-the-board reduction in state agency funding,, transferring $2 billion in spending to the next fiscal year and increasing taxes. Why not cut all public services to those not in the U.S. legally? Just a simple thought on my part that would go a long way to putting California back on its feet. A bell should be ringing in you head about right now that tells you this is what is coming throughout America if you refuse to act locally and demand that your political leaders act against illegal immigration. The Congressional Budget Office in December 2007 (CBO: The Impact of Unauthorized Immigrants on the Budgets of State and Local Governments) stated the tax revenues that unauthorized immigrants generate for state and local governments do not offset the total cost of services provided to those immigrants. Illegal immigrants are a NET COST LOSS and a burden to the budgets of all states. This cost is largely borne by the states and citizen taxpayers. Federal payments allocated by Washington fall far short in reimbursing state and local government expenditures. A report in April 2008 by economist Edwin Rubenstein titled the FISCAL COST OF IMMIGRATION, indicated: - The impact on 15 Federal Departments surveyed was: $346 billion in fiscal related costs in FY 2007. - Each immigrant cost taxpayers more than $9,000 per year. - An immigrant household, consisting of two adults and two children, cost taxpayers $36,000 per year. Legal immigrants were not separated out from illegal immigrants for the fiscal impact study, but if they had been, the fiscal cost per ILLEGAL immigrant would be even more shocking than the figures quoted above. The annual cost for uncompensated emergency care to Mexican Border States (California, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas) is $200 million. California taxpayers paid $79 million for illegal alien health care. Texas paid $74 million. ?Tom DeWeese, President of American Policy Center. The average annual cost per child for education is $7,161, totaling $109 billion to educate illegal aliens annually. The average cost of bilingual education is $1,200 per illegal student. U.S. schools annually educate 1.1 million illegal children. -Tom DeWeese, President of American Policy Center. A major cost factor in the conduct of school operations relates to the vast number of children of illegal immigrants in our classroom and the special-training dictates for many of those students being taught in their native language ? some 82 languages in San Diego County, 112 languages in Los Angeles County. ? North County Times, March 2008. In New York City alone, more than 200 languages are spoken in the public schools. ?NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development. $108.2 million is spent each year by U.S. border counties in the four state region to pay for law enforcement, criminal justice and emergency healthcare services to illegal immigrants, states a February 2008 report from the United States/Mexico Border Counties Coalition (USMBCC). Current federal reimbursement returns only 11.5 cents on the dollar to counties for handling criminal illegal immigrant services. >From 1999 through 2006, the 24 counties along the U.S.-Mexico border spent a cumulative $1.23 billion on services to process criminal undocumented immigrants through the law enforcement and criminal justice system. In fiscal year 2006 alone, the cost was $192 million. Yet, the federal government has only reimbursed these 24 counties $4.7 million for detaining criminal undocumented immigrants for fiscal year 2006 (and $54.8 million since 1999). These are staggering costs considering the rural nature and poverty level of most of these border counties. The costs to process undocumented immigrants come at the expense of basic, vital services to county residents. (Undocumented Immigrants in U.S. Border Counties: The Costs of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Services; U.S.-Mexico Border Counties Coalition February 200 8) The average illegal immigrant family uses $2,700/year more in services than it pays in taxes. In 2002, this amounted to a $10.4 billion drain on the federal budget. Some of the greatest federal costs included: Medicaid ($2.5 billion); treatment for the uninsured ($2.2 billion); food assistance programs ($1.9 billion); the federal prison and court systems ($1.6 billion); and federal aid to schools ($1.4 billion). According to the CIS report, since most of the illegal aliens currently in the workforce do not have a high school diploma, they only qualify for low paying jobs. That translates into low federal tax payments. Should illegal aliens ever receive an amnesty, it is estimated that net deficit costs would triple to $7,700 per household due to eligibility to all federal, state and local services. http://www.cis.org/articles/2004/fiscalrelease.html Furthermore; nationwide, 40% of households headed by an illegal alien receive welfare benefits and 56% have no health insurance. Standard & Poor?s reports that education of illegal alien children costs the states and federal government $11 billion dollars per year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hduG9Dw0oYg Heritage Foundation research shows in FY 2004, at the state and local level, the average low skill immigrant household received $14,145 in benefits and services and paid only $5,309 in taxes (those that actually paid taxes). The average low skill immigrant households imposed a net fiscal burden on state and local government of $8,836 per year. That is approximately $9000 for EACH immigrant household of which at least 50% are illegal aliens. In California, each illegal immigrant will take $50,000 in services from the state beyond what he will contribute in taxes during his lifetime. -The Immigration Solution; Manhattan Institute, 2007 Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation calculates that each immigrant who is a high school dropout, as most Mexican immigrants are, will end up costing taxpayers $85,000 over his lifetime. Taxpayers in our country pay more than $100 billion every year on health care and other services for illegal immigrants, including education, law enforcement costs, and housing. ? Congressman Dean Heller-Jan. 2008 http://www.nevadaappeal.com/article/20080127/OPINION/729401847 ****and one final kick in the ass, closely related to the recent debate about that woman who had what, 8 babies born on the taxpayer's backs? If this story doesn't piss you (and everyone else) off then you're the worst kind of bleeding heart liberals on earth, this story is about illegals taking advantage of our "generousity" to outrageous limits**** http://www.familysecuritymatters.org/publications/id.138/pub_detail.asp May 17, 2008 Illegal Aliens Cost Americans More than Taxes Gregory D. Lee I don't know what the intent of the Left-leaning Los Angeles Times was when they reported that "Healthcare gap could be fatal for ill immigrants," but it got my attention. The article explained how an illegal Mexican immigrant snuck her infant daughter, Puente, to Los Angeles to seek treatment for a liver ailment. True to form, the infant received not one, but two liver transplants 10 years apart at an average cost of $520,000 a pop, including anti-rejection medication. Ten years later, she received a third liver transplant, all courtesy of the California taxpayers through a state health care program for indigent children under the provisions of Medi-Cal. Now she's 21 years old and the state refuses to pay for a fourth liver transplant because she's too old for a specific child program. To me, the "health care gap" that could be fatal for ill illegal immigrants was certain death for the three American taxpaying residents of California that were deprived of one because they were passed over for an illegal alien. There are only so many livers available for transplants, and obviously three deserving Americans were deprived of them. And if that wasn't enough, the article went on: "Late last month, Puente learned of another, little-known option for patients with certain healthcare needs. If she notified U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services that she was in the country illegally, state health officials might grant her full Medi-Cal coverage. Puente did so, her benefits were restored and she is now awaiting a fourth transplant at UCLA." Just about the time I was beginning to feel sorry for this woman whose health has been unfortunate since infancy, Puente was quoted as saying, "It doesn't matter if I'm undocumented. They should take care of me at UCLA for the rest of my life because I've been there since I was a baby." Excuse me? Why haven't this woman and her mother been deported yet? Just watch - it won't help the > little guy one bit. I'll agree with you on that point. The economic stimulus bill, as originally formed, was meant to create jobs, primarily by investing in our crumbling infrastructure and helping people to buy homes. In the end, the bastardized bill that got presented to the prez was completely different, full of pork, handouts to state governments and corporations, insignificant tax cuts, extensions of unemployment benefits, expanded food stamp programs, and only $3 billion or so for infrastructure rebuilding. They even took out one of the most critical "real" economic stimulus parts of the plan -- the initial proposal included a $15k tax break for anyone buying a new home in 2009, but by the time fscking Congress was done fscking around it had turned into a ridiculously small deduction, so small it is meaningless. So IMO we're going to add another trillion in debt without doing anything to jump-start the economy, which is what a FSCKING STIMULUS PLAN IS SUPPOSED TO DO!! Do I sound a tad upset? Does anyone further understand why I hate politics and politicians so much? Obama ended up caving in the face of lobbyist pressure in the end, and to say I am furious with him for accepting this so called "plan" would be putting it mildly. He's not the face of change after all, he's just the same horse of a different color. A curse upon all of them. From nobody at spamcop.net Mon Feb 16 13:33:51 2009 From: nobody at spamcop.net (Indigo) Date: Mon Feb 16 13:35:09 2009 Subject: [Scsocial] Weird Credit Card theft experience Message-ID: I tried to order the (finally) updated navigation DVD from Acura for my specific model car over the weekend -- been waiting a LONG time for this thing to be updated, because mine is so ancient (it's a 2005 car with a 2004 disk, so figure the data is at least 1-2 years older than that). My online order attempt was rejected, I discovered, when I turned my PC on this morning. So I called the company, tried using the same VISA card (a card I rarely use) and it was rejected again. So I used my 'normal' FCU VISA card and the transaction went thru. Then I called Chase, the card issuer that was refusing the transaction, to see what was up. Apparently, on Jan 24, 2009, someone tried to use the card in an online transaction and entered the expiration date incorrectly 3 consecutive times, which caused the automated card protection system to de-activate the card. Chase is then supposed to call you to confirm whether you, the owner, were trying to use it, or if it indeed was stolen, and the rep claimed that they indeed tried to call me, but I never got such a phone call. For comparison's sake, my FCU calls me almost instantly when such an event happens (like within an hour or less). So I went online and looked at my other FCU VISA charges, and there was nothing there for the amount that had tried to be charged or for the CC transaction handler name. A lot of small online stores use 3rd party companies to handle the charges, so if you order something from joe-blow.com it may show up as a charge from jane-doe.com. So it is clear that *I* had not attempted to make that purchase using either one of my CCs (the Chase card is now canceled). I'm not sure whether I should be worried about this or not. I typically keep my paper CC statements for the preceeding 3 months and there are no charges for that card, and now I can't go online to check earlier statements because the account is canceled (I tried). My guess is that I used to the card to buy something online awhile ago and the CC processor either had their database hacked or they're slime themselves and someone in the company tried to use my card. The weird thing is that I never establish permanent accounts with online businesses unless I'm positive that they're on the up'n'up, like Amazon for instance, and theoretically if you do the "one time use" method as soon as the charge is verified and approved that card data disappears from all records at the processor's system, as opposed to permanent accounts, which _do_ keep all your card info. Did anyone hear about Chase getting hacked, or any other online CC processors getting hacked recently? Isn't it strange that somehow someone got ahold of my card # but not the expiration date? I could kinda understand if the theives failed because they didn't have the CCV number, but the expiration date? It's right there on the front of the card! P.S. Yes, I always check to make sure I'm on an https: site while ordering, and I've been shredding all sensitive documents for almost a year now. My online : order attempt was rejected, I discovered, when I turned my PC on this : morning. So I called the company, tried using the same VISA card (a card I : rarely use) and it was rejected again. So I used my 'normal' FCU VISA card : and the transaction went thru. : : Then I called Chase, the card issuer that was refusing the transaction, to : see what was up. Apparently, on Jan 24, 2009, someone tried to use the card : in an online transaction and entered the expiration date incorrectly 3 : consecutive times, which caused the automated card protection system to : de-activate the card. Chase is then supposed to call you to confirm whether : you, the owner, were trying to use it, or if it indeed was stolen, and the : rep claimed that they indeed tried to call me, but I never got such a phone : call. For comparison's sake, my FCU calls me almost instantly when such an : event happens (like within an hour or less). So I went online and looked at : my other FCU VISA charges, and there was nothing there for the amount that : had tried to be charged or for the CC transaction handler name. A lot of : small online stores use 3rd party companies to handle the charges, so if you : order something from joe-blow.com it may show up as a charge from : jane-doe.com. So it is clear that *I* had not attempted to make that : purchase using either one of my CCs (the Chase card is now canceled). : : I'm not sure whether I should be worried about this or not. I typically keep : my paper CC statements for the preceding 3 months and there are no charges : for that card, and now I can't go online to check earlier statements because : the account is canceled (I tried). My guess is that I used to the card to : buy something online awhile ago and the CC processor either had their : database hacked or they're slime themselves and someone in the company tried : to use my card. The weird thing is that I never establish permanent accounts : with online businesses unless I'm positive that they're on the up'n'up, like : Amazon for instance, and theoretically if you do the "one time use" method : as soon as the charge is verified and approved that card data disappears : from all records at the processor's system, as opposed to permanent : accounts, which _do_ keep all your card info. : : Did anyone hear about Chase getting hacked, or any other online CC : processors getting hacked recently? Isn't it strange that somehow someone : got a hold of my card # but not the expiration date? I could kinda understand : if the thieves failed because they didn't have the CCV number, but the : expiration date? It's right there on the front of the card! : : P.S. Yes, I always check to make sure I'm on an https: site while ordering, : and I've been shredding all sensitive documents for almost a year now. : We had a problem with the Indian support for a credit card that resulted in the card being blocked. Note the last sentence of the second paragraph under "LEAD HIGH" -- "At relatively low levels, lead can participate in synergistic toxicity with other elements (cadmium, mercury)." My mercury and aluminum levels were just a titch below the line for "elevated", and they also found cadmium and tungsten, neither of which has a naturally occuring use in the human body, meaning you should measure zero for both. Even more interesting is the nickel connection: "Ni hypersensitizes the immune system causing hyperallergenic responses to many different substances. Because nickel can displace zinc from binding sites on enzymes, it can have inhibiting or activating effects on such enzymes." So in theory, the high nickel levels in my body, which I strongly suspect were there prior to my Lyme infection, could have lead to a very exaggerated response from my immune system when I started to get sick. Like my out of the blue explosion of hives during 2006.....and my current hypersensitivity to the fumes of certain chemicals. Slightly OT, my Brother MFC-240C multipurpose device was *supposed* to have OCR software included in the installation package. Turned out to be false. I spent quite a bit of time yesterday investigating the issue and downloaded a bunch of OCR apps to try out. The best one I found also turns out to be completely free, it's called "Softi Free OCR". Small footprint and quick as hell to run. Of course it made mistakes in character recognition, but 5 minutes using Word spell check cleaned up both pages I scanned. I highly recommend it if you don't have OCR software for your scanner. Resulting test result text is below: LEAD HIGH This individuals urine lead is higher than expected which means that lead intake or bogy burden is higher than that of the reference population. Sources of lead include: old lead-pigment paints, batteries, industrial smelting and alloying, some types of solders Lead accumulates in bones and inhibits formation of heme and hemoglobin in erythroid precursor cells. Before this happens, however, lower levels of lead can cause other problems. These are: impaired vitamin D metabolism, decreased nerve conduction rates, and developmental problems for children including: loss of IQ, hearing impairment, delayed growth, and behavior disorders. Transplacental transfer of lea to the fetus can occur at very low lead concentrations in the body. At relatively low levels, lead can participate in synergistic toxicity with other elements (cadmium, mercury). NICKEL HIGH This individual's urine nickel is elevated which may or may not be of significance. Urinary excretion of nickel bound to cysteinyl or thiol compounds (such as glutathlione) or to amino acids (histidine, aspartic acid, arginine) is the predominant its of excretion. Most clinically observed nickel contaminations are manifested as keystones - contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. However, Ni hypersensitizes the immune system causing hyperallergenic responses to many different substances. Because nickel can displace zinc from binding sites on enzymes, it can have inhibiting or activating effects on such enzymes. I'm not going to do it. We have another classic "Old Western Medicine" vs. "Alternative Medicine" issue here, it's a pointless debate that nobody can "win". I'll add one final statement -- the ONLY treatments and therapies that have helped me heal as far as I have to date are from the world of "alternative medicine". I'm sticking with what works FOR ME, I don't care what "standard treatment and practices" have to say about my health issues. I've always had weird body chemistry to start with, it's very common for me to react completely opposite to a drug than the "normal" person's response would be, or to require double or triple the "normal" dosage to get the desired affect. Take narcotic pain killers, for instance. They make most people groggy and unable to think/work/operate heavy machinery.....in my body, specifically my brain, they act like stimulants....my metabolism increases and I become hyperactive to the point where at times I have trouble falling asleep at night. A pretty useless test (for someone like you who is concerned about their long term lead exposure)? So you are telling me that you read that article or some part of it and you concluded that your urine screening test for lead was worthwhile and a blood lead level would not be, in spite of your own reference above to a statement about the BLL being in equilibrium with bone lead and in spite of the sentence I pasted about urine lead (not being useful)? The article is addressing not only some acute exposures, but chronic exposures as well and makes these statements and tables (below either pasted as is or expressed in my words designated ): - Once absorbed, lead is found in all tissues, but eventually 90% or more of the body burden is accumulated (or redistributed) into bone with a biological half-life of years to decades. Lead is excreted primarily in the urine. Lead does not remain in the bone permanently but is slowly released back into the blood. - Documented health risks and medical management recommendations are summarized in Table 4. - Maybe you should look the article over again. -- Mike Easter kibitzer, not SC admin From nobody at spamcop.net Sat Feb 21 18:06:35 2009 From: nobody at spamcop.net (Indigo) Date: Sat Feb 21 18:10:07 2009 Subject: [Scsocial] A good laugh Message-ID: Dunno if this has been posted here before, but it got a big laugh out of me ;-) It's a funny twist on those MasterCard commercials, the ending is hilarious! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xo0vietiag From MikeE at ster.invalid Sat Feb 21 19:42:43 2009 From: MikeE at ster.invalid (Mike Easter) Date: Sat Feb 21 19:45:08 2009 Subject: [Scsocial] Re: Interesting info from my heavy metal test results References: Message-ID: Indigo wrote: > "Mike Easter" > We > have another classic "Old Western Medicine" vs. "Alternative Medicine" > issue here, it's a pointless debate that nobody can "win". If you are a fan of alternative medicine, I suggest you consider this concept of 'complementary and alternative medicine' (as opposed to rejecting anything that conventional medicine sez as it must be wrong). This is from a discussion of alternative medicine in the wiki "It is frequently grouped with complementary medicine, which generally refers to the same interventions when used in conjunction with mainstream techniques,[3][4][5] under the umbrella term complementary and alternative medicine, or CAM." 345 are wiki footnotes Here's a snip from 3 "the major CAM systems have many common characteristics, including a focus on individualizing treatments, treating the whole person, promoting self-care and self-healing, and recognizing the spiritual nature of each individual." That sounds pretty good to me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_medicine http://whccamp.hhs.gov/fr2.html White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy -- Mike Easter kibitzer, not SC admin From nobody at spamcop.net Sat Feb 21 20:46:32 2009 From: nobody at spamcop.net (Indigo) Date: Sat Feb 21 20:50:08 2009 Subject: [Scsocial] Re: Interesting info from my heavy metal test results In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: "Mike Easter" wrote in message news:gnq71j$sb$1@news.spamcop.net... > > Here's a snip from 3 "the major CAM systems have many common > characteristics, including a focus on individualizing treatments, treating > the whole person, promoting self-care and self-healing, and recognizing > the spiritual nature of each individual." I'm ok with that characterization, and the most important part of that statement is "a focus on individualizing treatments, treating the whole person". I'm not completely opposed to traditional Western Medicine, they have their place in my health care (like orthopedic surgeons, unfortunately), but they tend to focus on specific areas (whatever their specialty is) instead of looking at the body as an overall integrated unit. The "alternative therapies" that I've had the most success with are chiropractic care, acupuncture, and something called "Bowen Therapy". All 3 of these methods look at the entire body for root causes of problems in specific areas and promote natural healing -- helping the body to heal itself, which is much more powerful than any drug. I've been seeing the same chiropractor since 1990, and I have literally dozens of stories I could tell you about me walking into her office incapacitated in some physical manner and walking out totally fixed. For instance, I might go in there complaining about neck/back pain, when in reality the problem is being caused by a misalignment of the bones in my hips or legs. When something gets out of kilter, the local muscles attempt to "correct" the problem, and if you don't get treatment to fix the problem more and more muscle groups are recruited to help support the muscles that are under direct stress. Ergo, a problem with my hips eventually ends up causing my neck muscles to hurt. Same thing with my acupuncturist, although she works via different methods, of course. She literally helped save my life when I was at my lowest and sickest point in fighting my illness(es), and that's no exaggeration, trust me on that. I don't pretend to totally understand how/why what she does works so well ON ME (repeating the mantra of focusing treatments on individuals as opposed to what the "average person" needs), but there are days she literally performs miracles on my body and mind. Of course, if whatever is causing the problem still exists in my body (toxins, for instance), the effects of her treatments are temporary, but it sure helps to get relief for a few days. Other things she fixes for me are more permanent, similar to some of the chiropractic work I get, but I won't go into the details on those specific issues, too many to mention and TMI. The characterized problem being -- a apparently modern and moderate Muslim -- businessman, executive, wearing western suit and tie - founds a cable TV with English language programming whose target audience was (presumably moderate) Muslims ostensibly to 'balance negative portrayals of Muslims following the attacks of September 11, 2001' -- [which negative portrayals are typically based on the concept that in their heart of hearts, Muslims are bound to the past and prone to violent self-destructive behaviors based on some personal interpretation of their religious beliefs and principles]. This apparent moderate who is speaking to and about modern moderate Muslimism beheads his wife and then contritely leads the police to her headless body. The story being (this particular allegedly moderate Muslim) isn't so moderate after all -- and probably neither are a whole lot of other allegedly moderate Muslims. For some reason, I'm reminded of a recent TV travel show - Rick Steve's was touring Iran. He visited a mosque in prayer session. Prominently displayed in 10 foot yellow signs off to the side of the prayerfuls were signs which in Arabic proclaimed (paraphrasing) "Death to all Israelis" and Steve commented on the juxtaposition of Iran's politics and religion. Islamism appears to have a problem in today's world in which too many Muslims are married to their own particular flavor of personal and religious conviction which is racially and ethnically and religiously dangerously and fanatically intolerant. -- Mike Easter kibitzer, not SC admin From MikeE at ster.invalid Sun Feb 22 14:09:53 2009 From: MikeE at ster.invalid (Mike Easter) Date: Sun Feb 22 14:10:08 2009 Subject: [Scsocial] Re: Head Job References: Message-ID: Mike Easter wrote: > a apparently > cable TV > Rick Steve's > Steve an apparently cable TV channel Steves (x2) ... and any other necessary. -- Mike Easter kibitzer, not SC admin From JLNKOOECOCGY at spammotel.com Sun Feb 22 14:40:22 2009 From: JLNKOOECOCGY at spammotel.com (Canopus) Date: Sun Feb 22 14:45:09 2009 Subject: [Scsocial] Re: Head Job References: Message-ID: Mike Easter scribed: >The story being (this particular allegedly moderate Muslim) isn't so >moderate after all -- and probably neither are a whole lot of other >allegedly moderate Muslims. How does what you recall happening in the UK in the last few decades bear upon my argument that beheading people is an 'Islamic thing'? Yes it /is/ _more_ than an Islamic thing. Personally I think that capital punishment has regressed since it has wandered away from the efficiency of the guillotine to the frequently incompetent methods such as hanging/strangulating, electrical frying, and lethal (hopefully) injection. The old days in which decapitation was flawed by dull swords and inaccurate swings were advanced a quantum leap by Dr. Guillotin's marvelous invention. > True, there was a case where > Islamic militants beaded a hostage a few years back, but, that was > again a rare instance. The Amnesty International article on Zimbabwe doesn't have anything to say about decapitations while it outlines a litany of abuses. http://thereport.amnesty.org/eng/Regions/Africa/Zimbabwe The human rights situation in Zimbabwe continued to deteriorate. Zimbabwe has abolished capital punishment. Saudi Arabia on the other hand still uses decapitation as their method of capital punishment. If a bone is twisted or displaced into an unnatural position and someone manipulates said bone back into it's proper position and the pain goes away, how can you claim that treatment is quackery and only a psychosomatic effect? You've obviously never seen a chiropractor, but you KNOW when they move a bone -- it not only (usually) makes an audible sound, you can literally feel the individual bone or bones in the joint move. I cannot believe how close-minded you are....and you'd better pray that you never come down with a physical problem that "traditional" cut'n'slice drug pushing western-based medicine can't diagnose, let alone fix. Around here, our local chiropractors are very good. They listen to their patients, they provide good therapy for them, and they don't visit/apply strange principles to conditions unrelated to their insight and expertise. As a result, the chiropractic in this community is good physical therapy and helpful manipulations for appropriate musculoskeletal problems. Our local chiropractors know how to recognize which problems they shouldn't be involved with at all and when to recommend to their patients that they seek other avenues of care. In other communities all over the nation, many many chiropractors are quacks who try to apply strange principles based on their so-called 'education' to all kinds of conditions that they shouldn't even be treating and which such chiropractors misrepresent various x-ray findings as a justification for inappropriate therapy. Those chiropracters mislead and prevent patients who should be seeing other practitioners from leaving their inappropriate and ineffective ministrations and getting real help. It is a wonder that some chirpractors are effective at all, considering the zany principles of the Palmer method and how so many of them have been trained -- or rather misguided in their training. -- Mike Easter kibitzer, not SC admin From nobody at spamcop.net Tue Feb 24 12:53:10 2009 From: nobody at spamcop.net (Indigo) Date: Tue Feb 24 12:55:08 2009 Subject: [Scsocial] Ooo-La-La! Oh, good grief. Shelby Cobra 427 Patrick? What's a Patrick? This isn't the first time she's been featured in a SI swimsuit issue. At least she's gotten to where/ so that/ she can *drive* decently/successfully in 2008. Some tidbits from the wiki... Prior to her win in Motegi, the most notable criticism of Patrick was that she had not won a race in three years of IRL competition and still garnered significant media attention. her apparent willingness to be marketed on her looks, examples being her appearance in FHM in April 2003 and Sports Illustrated in June 2005, February 2008, and February 2009 Before 2008, some racing journalists, IndyCar fans, and other drivers claimed that Patrick's relatively low body weight gave her an advantage in the IndyCar series, which had a strict minimum weight set for the cars but which did not account for the driver's own weight. After Patrick's IRL win, she was praised by many drivers. NASCAR driver and former IRL champion Tony Stewart, for example, said "I think obviously she's got talent; she's been successful in every form of racing she's been in so far and I don't see why she wouldn't be successful here [in NASCAR]." -- Mike Easter kibitzer, not SC admin From MikeE at ster.invalid Wed Feb 25 12:57:33 2009 From: MikeE at ster.invalid (Mike Easter) Date: Wed Feb 25 13:00:08 2009 Subject: [Scsocial] Re: Ooo-La-La! I /did/ scrape over 4 megs of the big pics from the site and sent them to a friend who I knew was a Danica (and racing) buff. He commented disparagingly on the chest area and her derriere, but generally positively and particularly on 'sultry' looks and her hair, of all things. He doesn't have the right appreciation for a 'girlish' figure in the chest and bun department. The story behind that silver Shelby Cobra 427 is a whole 'nother matter. I agree. wiki sez 1-2 min (per feeding). I say keep it on the low side because they are so piggish as to influence the novice feeder that they are starving to death. As long as you are feeding them regularly, they aren't going to starve, and it will be easier for you to take care of their water, which you are also a novice. So, the (inexperience) threat is 'bad water' rather than not enough food, so that's how I would structure my priorities to 'watch out for'. Too much food makes too much bad water too fast. http://www.aquariumhobbyist.com/articles/Goldfish.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldfish -- Mike Easter kibitzer, not SC admin From MikeE at ster.invalid Sat Feb 28 08:03:20 2009 From: MikeE at ster.invalid (Mike Easter) Date: Sat Feb 28 08:05:07 2009 Subject: [Scsocial] Re: How to feed goldfish? As long as their water is clean and cool, (more food = more poo and nutrients = dirtier) goldfish will pretty much eat as fast as they can grow, which is pretty fast, so unless your tank is vast and you can accommodate 14 very large goldfish (mine grew from 1.5" to 9" in one year, and was still growing in it's fountain when I had to give it up) one or relatively small feedings should help keep your water clean and the fish small. Throw in either a small wad of flakes (like a nickel) once a day for smaller fish, or 1/2 a teaspoon of grains twice a day, more if you notice they are lethargic, or over aggressive. LOL, that would be a double whammy if Kara and Hera were both hybrids, I still don't see where Kara's the harbinger of Death yet, unless the term isn't being used in it's literal sense.. maybe more of a metaphorical one? and IF Kara, is a hybrid, she wouldn't have been a resurrection candidate, so now we have to go back to the crashed viper on the Cylon planet and look at Kara's body there again and try to figure out where that comes into play.. or is that really Kara's body? I mean aside from the hair color, the medallion, and well the "partial" Viper number....??? idk it's quite intriguing.. Also, I forgot to mention this the first time in regard to Galen, remember what the president said about Boomer last night, looks like she called it right... sad too because Galen really does love her regardless.. well, he might not now, but up until she betrayed him he did... If that means 12" front2back & 24" wide and 24" deep, we are talking about 2 sf sqft of water surface. Temporarily using the last article, that would only support 2 inches of goldfish. I think he's inclined to give goldfish a generous amount of water surface, but I also think your little 20 gallon tank isn't going to support 14 goldfish of any size very long. Even if they were currently little babies less than 1" long (I'm beginning to suspect your neighbor must have reproducing goldfish) they are going to grow and grow. If your neighbor has the right kind of environment, goldfish can be prolific and if their eggs can be protected from being eaten by adults and if the babies can hide or escape from being eaten, then maybe you inherited hir goldfish because of reproduction issues. S/He's doing some population control. Anyway, it is very nice that s/he also gave you a 20 gal tank, but you are soon going to have to make some additional plans about whether you are going to expand your water surface area or shrink your fish population. -- Mike Easter kibitzer, not SC admin From borgholio at storymind.com Sat Feb 28 18:07:31 2009 From: borgholio at storymind.com (Borgholio) Date: Sat Feb 28 18:10:08 2009 Subject: [Scsocial] Re: How to feed goldfish? According to various websites I've been to, it seems to be around 1 goldfish for every 2 gallons. If surface area is used, one site suggested one fish for every 24 square inches. If that's the case, then I am just about at my limit already. If it turns out that my tank is too small, I will purchase another. I agree that it was a very nice gift from my neighbor. He actually doesn't breed goldfish, he prefers tropical varieties. He is currently building a tropical saltwater tank that will house live corals, starfish, and other reef creatures. I'm gawking at how much he expects to spend on it. :-/
