your 'stealthed' newsgroup depiction involved

only two participants involved, thread starter with no detail, and a 
'me too' that had detail gone a bit off-track

no corresponding traffic anywhere else

no response from upstream, sideways, etc.

more time passed ....

actual intent: was get one of the two participants to make some kind 
of sign that they'd even bothered to come back  .. then make some 
kind of sign that they even existed ...

there was a bit of fauth involved that as these two had 'found' this 
newsgroup, they would be monitoring it, looking for any replies 
....apparently, a very bad assumption made on my part
