o to Mike -- how to improve your communication
o to Wazoo -- how to improve yours
If I were going to give myself 'advice' about how to post, I would tell
myself to be less wordy and to spend a little more time trying to make
myself 'crystal clear' but to use only a fraction of the words that I
do, which is not easy for me and takes much more time. So I don't do
that.
The easiest way for me to do 'it' (be more succinct) would be/ is/ to
reply to something in my own 'wordy' rambling way and then to put an
'executive' summary at the top which uses very few words in an outline
'staccato' fashion, and I do that sometimes.
If I were going to give Wazoo advice about how to 'do it'/ communicate
better, I would tell Wazoo to use only complete sentences in the body.
Examples of incomplete sentences aren't seen in the post today, but look
at the post you are 'expanding' on, particularly the sentences which
start.... 'No known reason...' 'Suspect is...'
I think that it is extremely difficult to communicate effectively in
newsgroups and such, because there is a lack of 'realtime' dynamics,
bodylanguage, and numerous other elements which facilitate communication
'in person' and so we have to somehow make up for what is missing.
The reason top posting communicates so poorly is because it destroys the
context, and the factors that affect our ability to 'read'/interpret
what the top poster is thinking about are adversely affected by the lack
of context. When you 'speak' in incomplete sentences 'to save time' and
to be more 'casual' it makes it harder to interpret what you are saying.
At least it does for me, I don't know about others.
