I know from past experience Windows sometimes does not like to connect to some available networks so I thought this might be the problem. After trying various things I do not think it is a Windows problem but it may be a Windows configuration problem (but what do I know as "I do not do Windows"). I disabled the Verizon wireless router and hooked up the D-Link access port I had been running before but Windows does not see it either (it had been working for a few years). I know there was a Windows update recently because the firewall had been turned on again so I am wondering what other options MS could have changed without first asking permission. On my computer (not Windows) I can see seven private networks and one public network. On my wife's computer (Windows) I can only see one public network (peer). Looking at the configuration the only options I can find are: Any available network (access point preferred) Access point (infrastructure) networks only Computer-to-computer (ad hoc) networks only The first one is what is selected but the results appear to be as if the last option has been selected. I have tried selecting the second option but it does not change the output, it still seems to work as if the last option was selected. Any one here have any ideas on what I need to do to get wireless working again on this computer before my wife causes me too much grief? -- Robert Blair From borgholio at storymind.com Mon Jan 5 00:44:36 2009 From: borgholio at storymind.com (Borgholio) Date: Mon Jan 5 00:45:09 2009 Subject: [Scgeeks] Question about reading Linux Ext3-formatted drives in Windows Message-ID: My neighbor gave me a bunch of computer stuff he was going to throw out, including a still shrink-wrapped NSLU2 Linksys Network Attached Storage unit. This is not the kind where you put drives in, but the kind where you plug in your USB drives. After a little putzing around with it I got it working pretty well. The problem is that even though it technically supports FAT32 and NTFS-formatted drives, it can have issues with them. It only really works at it's best when you let it format drives in the Ext3 format. Problem is that the Ext3 format is not natively read by Windows XP. I found a solution for this at www.fs-driver.org, but I'm curious if there are any other solutions? The reason I ask is because I intend to use this NAS and it's attached drives for automated nightly backups of my networked computers. If for some reason the NAS fails, I would like to simply move the USB drive back to my computer and recover the data on it. However, I can't do that if Windows can't read the Ext3 format...meaning the data would be lost. So aside from fs-driver.org, are there other options that I could choose? Thanks in advance! I think if I were going to change the firmware, I would go with one of the newer 'advanced' firmwares which the linux community developed because linksys had to make the source code for their device available. (that isn't terribly expensive) Due to a neighbor who used to take strolls on people's properties at 3am, I did a fair bit of research into security cameras and DVR systems to go with it. I found that most wireless cameras of any decent quality were IP cameras which were several times more expensive than a decent CCD wired camera, and I've never seen any battery / solar powered ones. I would suggest getting something like this: http://www.camerasuperstore.com/arc-12b49-24.html That is the exact camera I have and it serves me well. Good quality during the day, reasonable sensitivity at night as well as an IR illuminator in the center. It uses industry standard video and power cables, which means you can buy a power / video combo cable that is up to a couple hundred feet long (you may need a more powerful power supply if you do that though). The fact that you can buy extension cables means that you don't need to worry about it being solar / battery powered...provided it's within a couple hundred feet of where you have the video recorder stored. Any longer than that and an IP camera using 802.11g wireless might work, but you'd still have to worry about power. Right-click on "My Computer" and click "properties". Click on "Advanced". Under "Startup and Recovery" click "Settings". Under "System Failure" make sure "Write an event to the system log" and "Send an administrative alert" are checked. Make sure "Automatically restart" is NOT checked. Under "Write debugging information" make sure you have "Kernel memory dump" selected. With that done, hit "ok" and next time your computer crashes it will record a dump of the kernel memory in your windows folder under the name "memory.dmp". It will also show the blue screen without rebooting so you can take down the error code. Once you have a memory.dmp file, you can debug it yourself by following the instructions here: http://www.networkworld.com/news/2005/041105-windows-crash.html?page=1 Or if it's small enough, you can email it to me and I'll debug it. In either case, it should help a great deal in figuring out what is causing the crash. Something else weird has been occurring at times for at least the last week that might be related -- I have shortcut links to open various hard drives using Explorer on my desktop, and sometimes when I click on them I get an error saying something like "cannot find (or open?) C:\myfiles", but then Explorer opens in the correct location anyway. Once I've clicked that specific shortcut, Winbloze (Vista SP1) seems to "remember" the directory location, because I don't get the error message when clicking on the link after the first time I do it in the morning. Today I saw an error message very similar while trying to update the database, it said it couldn't find/open the windows subdirectory (probably located in "Documents and Settings") where I assume the database is written (it was a long jumble of characters similar to an "identity". I typically put my PC to sleep overnight, and that breaks my internet connection (every morning Windows Mail has an error saying it lost connectivity), ghod knows what else the "sleep" function is screwing up. I've also downloaded and updated the Windows Updater to the latest version, downloaded and tried to manually install the latest Defender database, still no joy. It's like Defender lost it's rights to write to the HD or something, and some of the things I culled from Event view indicate something like that may be the problem, how it happened I have no idea. I've been googling all day long, lots of folks having problems with updates not loading, but no one with my specifically strange errors (of course.....). I'd like to un-install Defender and start from scratch, but I haven't figured out how to do that without starting over from scratch (full re-install of Vista), and I am NOT going to wipe my drive and start all over, I'd lose to many licenses and crap that I need to run my software. I wonder if you have some malware on your pc that is disabling Microsoft's security software and sending a stop request to the service. Microsoft released a security patch today (Tuesday) that blocks a security issue allowing remote code execution. Such a hole could allow someone to remotely put something on your pc without you knowing it, especially if one is directly on the internet or not inoculated on a large network from neighbors (office, etc) http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms09-jan.mspx C|Net said in an article ( http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10141764-83.html ) the remote execution issue doesn't exist in Vista, but does affect Win2000 and WinXP. Can you get another reputable security product on your computer to scan for any issues? I don't really trust Microsoft with security. I prefer third party products, those companies that realize their next paychecks depend on the success of their products. ZoneAlarm and Kaspersky are my current favs. AndrewB Indigo wrote: > My PC has not been able to update the Windows Defender database since > 12/29/08, I noticed the failure a few days ago but just today started > looking into it in detail. G'day Charles (well, it's day here). Yeah, most of us endure Outhouse because it's the corporate 'thang' and otherwise have as little to do with it as possible. But others actually do stuff with it. Like at http://www.office-addins.com/-outlook-addins/add-contacts.html - OK it's a macro (horrors) and it's not free (double horror). But if corporate insist we use the thing then corporate should be prepared to pay for bringing it up to some state of friendliness in terms of us benighted users (though as said, day here) cherry-picking the features from all our preferred email clients and adding them to whatever we're using, right? That's the way applications are *supposed* to evolve - through 'evlovation'. The only way to go, seriously. Yeah "automatically adds e-mail addresses to the contact folder when you reply a message and/or send a new message." Can't vouch for it - 'my' corporate won't buy it for me, says macros are out to get us, Bill Gates is the spawn of Satan and M$ the placenta (confused biology there but ...) and we're gunna use the software exclusively anyway 'because'. Good/better luck if you like the look of it. If not, well, I tried and I'm accustomed to rejection and ridicule (I'm married). No, really, that would be OK. It says it pulls 800ma which by itself probably won't drain your battery if you only run it for say 8 - 12 hours at a time. But you also have to take into account the power draw of the camera too. Provided you only use one camera, you can expect it to take up to another 500ma or so. The power supply for my camera is rated at 1amp, so at worst you're looking at nearly 2amp current draw. I'd make sure your battery can support losing 24 amps or so every time you leave the recorder + camera running overnight. Here is a link for you to check out: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02850034000P Click the "specs" and it'll tell you how many amp hours this specific battery can hold. If you drain the battery over the course of 20 hours, it will put out a maximum of 68 amp hours. To find it's optimum rate of drain, divide the amp hours by the hours. In this case, 68 / 20. The battery will work at it's best if you drain no more than 3.4 amps per hour. More than that and it will eventually damage the battery. Now to apply this to your system. At worst, the system you picked out + camera will pull 1.2 - 2 amps. That means if you let it sit overnight (10 hours) the battery I linked above will be 1/3 drained. A weaker or lower-capacity battery might be drained halfway or more. So again, you want to make sure your battery is in good condition before you install something like this. Not really. Malware is getting a lot smarter and evolving. There are malware agents that get downloaded via a browser from social networks (facebook, friendster), install themselves, and in the background, navigate the web site and send junk to your friends, or post messages on your behalf to infected websites. But I digress. If you have some malware on your pc, it may be listening for Defender and disabling it at the right moment. That's what I'd do if I had time to write such cruft. >> Can you get another reputable security product on your computer to >> scan for any issues? >> > > I have both Spybot and AVG8 running at the same time, scheduled for > regular updates and scans. "Access denied" doesn't necessarily mean it can't write. That's almost a catch all for computer programmers. :) Check the Dec 11 2007 steps by "I am CanadianEh?" at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic120413.html Note the drawbacks they noted as well. What? it is listed in my registry (add/remove programs) as windows defender, the support link also offers a "repair" (usually a reinstall) And there is an uninstall option. It's not listed in my add/remove program list -- none of the windows security apps are listed. I *think* I solved the problem today, but I dunno how...I was reading about the same error code occurring for users trying to update Office 2003, and found this link http://support.microsoft.com/?id=884298 about the original installation path getting corrupted in the registry (some guy claimed that RegCure, which I used, was responsible for deleting the key, wasn't the issue in my case). Dunno if you recall, but earlier I mentioned something about Explorer saying it couldn't find the location of certain directories I have shortcuts set up for, although it ends up opening up anyway in the proper location after bitching. Something corrupt in the reg file, I assume. Anyway, I went to the similar location mentioned for Office 2003 for Defender: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition Updates\{37709043-4058-425C-8B53-92975D00F550} and tried changing the Definition Update Subdirectory to a newly created one. Didn't work. Then I went into C:\Program Data\....\Defender and tried taking ownership of the old database directory and the new one. Still no joy. Then I created a new authorized username "myname-administrator" and gave it full permission to both directories, ran Defender update again, and Voila! It worked.....but the update was installed in the OLD SUBDIRECTORY! I have two admin accounts, don't ask me how/why it happened, both are "myname - " , the difference is one is in the group "administratorS" and one is "administrator" (no "s"). Guess I should check which name I'm logging in with, it's all automatic to skip the password screen. Absolutely necessary, especially if he's going to let friends use his PC. They should have minimum access to controls. Depending on how old he is, you may not want him to have certain controls either. >> .... >> I have two admin accounts, don't ask me how/why it happened, both are >> "myname - " , the difference is one is in the group "administratorS" and >> one is "administrator" (no "s"). I think the original admin account was under "admins", but somewhere in time I was unable to do something with some file(s), I couldn't change the options/permissions allowed with that account (they were greyed out or refused to be applied), so I created a new admin account to give me full control of the entire PC and all it's files. That's the one that I currently log in with. > > I've seen something similar in XP, at home My wife is the "Owner" and an > admin, I am an admin, and the kids accounts are unprivileged. > > Some things don't work right If I do them from my admin account, but work > fine from hers, go figure. Probably something to do with your permissions, that's where I find most of my problems. And ownership rules too. You have to dig several dialogue boxes past the normal (short list) permissions seen in the simple "right click/properties/security" tab. I wonder if it has anything to do with file associations. I sometimes get the same thing after a Firefox update, I click on a URL link on the Desktop or in another program such as OE and get exactly the same result as you are getting except it's not explorer that the error message is about, but, FF and then it goes ahead and opens the link anyway. I traced it to File Associations where some had been changed so that Use DDE were checked in them under Open. I unchecked any with that checked and the problem goes away. If an entry really needs that checked then it seems to restore the check mark, if they don't it's left alone. -- Rob http://www.flickr.com/photos/canopus_archives/ http://canopianjournal.blogspot.com/ http://canopusarchives.multiply.com/ From nobody at spamcop.net Fri Jan 23 08:42:37 2009 From: nobody at spamcop.net (bar0) Date: Fri Jan 23 08:45:09 2009 Subject: [Scgeeks] Re: Vista advice, User accounts References: Message-ID: "Charles" wrote in message news:Xns9B9BD1F4332FFTheShrubIsAnAss@216.154.195.61... > No way it was me! And get this -- I've been fiddling around all day trying to fix this and that (mostly huge DLLs that are loading into memory automatically without me first opening the associated app) -- I just clicked on every single problematic link and got no errors! I _did_ us RunScanner to fix a few registry problems, but nothing that looked like it had anything to do with my problem. The only other thing I did was to take ownership of C:\Program Data\*.* I'm sure the problem will re-occur when I shutdown the PC and reboot, this has happened several times in the past.....the problem disappears then reappears.... Umm...., yes to both (they are colour coded and their is a 1 to 1 swap) > > Is there a real payback? Yes, when we had one our electric bills (Houston Summers), or gas bills (Calgary Winters) were consistently 2/3 of our neighbours. In Houston the payback was less than a month. I don't have one these days and the only brand (which I don't like for a variety of reasons) that seesm to be available here is Hunter. When I had them in the past I used "White" or a White OEM for a store brand. I've had both mechanical and "digital", I prefer the mechanical, easier to set up, but only weekend and weekday schedules usually. > > TIA From nobody at spamcop.net Thu Jan 29 22:38:42 2009 From: nobody at spamcop.net (bar0) Date: Thu Jan 29 22:40:08 2009 Subject: [Scgeeks] Re: Anyone with home electrical knowledge? What other devices get power from underground wires nearby? Your light is providing the shortest path to ground for some "hot" wire, I'd say theres an exposed hot lead. Try turning all other outdoor lights or appliances off.one at a time (from the breaker box if necessary) and have the dim bulb watched. Whhen it goes dark the cable to the shut off device it the problem. I have outside lights which are not connected to anything, but instead get their power from their solar circuitry. You mentioned a switch, but you didn't tell me enough. You can put a switch circuit on anything. It has something like 8 settings you can store, with any variable you choose. And you can manually change the temp setpoint using the up/down arrow keys on the box, it'll stay at the new temp until the next programmed temp change gets loaded. Overide is accomplished by pressing the "hold" button, it'll stay at that temp setpoint until you remove the hold. I love it, it saved me a ton of money over the years, but being single really helped. I used to set the temp for 80 in the summer between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm because no one was in the house to complain about being hot. Same thing in reverse during the winter. Since I've been homebound for a couple years I had to change that, and my electric bills show it. I currently have it set to go to 72 at 7:30 am to help me wake up (doesn't work when I'm sick!) and to warm up the bathroom so I can shower without freezing, then it goes to 70 at 9:30 am, and 68 at 10:30 pm. Didn't have enough settings left to program 3 daily changes for the weekend when I would normally be home, so it does have it's limits. Very important point to be aware of -- a programmable thermostat for a NG or oil furnace is pretty cheap and easy to install (4 color coded wires, IIRC), but if you have a heat pump you'll need to buy a different kind, and they're something like 3 times more expensive. The ground fault referenced was the physical defect/problem in the wiring that could be either an evolved problem or bad from the get go.
