Sorry, dumb answer. Firefox doesn't use much CPU time, it just hogs memory. I do know that when I start up some tasks (mainly A/V stuff, I think) the dual CPUs get stressed momentarily and that's when the stuttering in the streaming audio occurs. As for RAM... it's cheap now.. max it out... As for memory usage: You may want to consider installing Google Chrome just to use it's memory monitoring feature. It shows memory usage not just for itself but for all current browser sections. 'About:memory' in URL line will display the info If you can duplicate the stuttering event...have task manager open and running. Then click on the box, in the lower left that says something about 'show processes from all users' Now click on the CPU column once (or twice) so that the tasks sort in descending order by CPU time. Now recreate the event.... Who are the 'top' users of CPU? Also, has it been a while since you have run CHKDSK? It is a little harder under VISTA, but can be done. First, create a desktop icon for 'cmd.exe' Now right-click it and choose 'Run as administator' Enter CHKDSK C: /F It should complain about the disk being in use. Choose option to run on next reboot. Close window Reboot PC Chkdsk SHOULD run. If it doesn't (and there is a confirmed bug about this) do the following. Reboot and Hit F8 until you get the options menu Now Choose 'Repair your Computer' Now choose the default US Keyboard Now signon a user. Now choose "Command Prompt" Type in CHKDSK C: /F Let it run to completion EXIT Reboot PC Now monitor error logs From loyal at spamcop.user Sat Sep 6 15:40:23 2008 From: loyal at spamcop.user (AndrewB) Date: Sat Sep 6 15:45:03 2008 Subject: [Scgeeks] Re: Great, my first BSOD In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Joe Gill wrote: > > "Indigo" wrote in message > news:g9sl88$k4n$1@news.spamcop.net... >> >> "Indigo" wrote in message >> news:g9sirt$8fn$1@news.spamcop.net... >>>> 2) As for the 'stuttering problem', when that occurs again, I would >>>> look for errors in the log. It's gotten a lot of not-so-good reviews, and a number of security issues have been discovered. And it doesn't work with all web sites just yet. So using it might only be partially helpful. There appear to be some Firefox add-ons that allow one to monitor and manage memory. Not all appear to work in 3.0.1 just yet though. So there may be more teeth cutting on that route. I'd assume that any tv rendering would cause CPU load situations (watching a DVD, streaming TV, etc) that may introduce stutter as the OS juggles tasks back and forth. > If you can duplicate the stuttering event...have task manager open and > running. > Then click on the box, in the lower left that says something about 'show > processes from all users' > Now click on the CPU column once (or twice) so that the tasks sort in > descending order by CPU time. > Now recreate the event.... In XP, you can right click on the drive, Properties, Tools, Error Checking and from there check the integrity of the drive. Sometimes you may have to reboot, especially if you want to check the drive with Windows or your swap file. Indigo's earlier post about Code Integrity is potentially worth notice. To read about Code Integrity, check the blue box on the ride side of http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc160980.aspx Since tcpip.sys is a core driver, and necessary for any networking, perhaps even client-server communications on the pc between processes (not necessarily for LAN/Ethernet/Internet), I'd guess that it's failure to load because it couldn't be verified might have caused all sorts of other issues. Why couldn't it be verified? Don't know. Perhaps a logic bug showed. Or some disk corruption. Or both. Disk corruption could cause logic problems if the code isn't robust for all error cases. Indigo, I'm assuming that when you shut down your computer when the tv streaming application was working, that the shutdown was a normal shutdown and not just yanking the power. My tip: On any abnormal system shutdown, which includes BSOD's, check the disk integrity with a disk check, chkdsk, or whatever ASAP. Unsolicited Advice: Clear the Event Viewer of all data just before you do your next Shut Down. You might have to do a Refresh first, in order to get the Clear... to show. You'll be asked if you want to save the data when you do the clear, in case you're concerned about losing the history. Reason is to get a clean start at watching errors and not be influenced by the past. Keep a mental record of what you're doing and re-check Event Viewer periodically or whenever anything goes "funny" in any way. Also, note the code that indicates your bootup if you don't already recognize it; can be real useful sometimes and easy to spot with a cleared table. Pick whatever error you think you can do anything about and try to fix it. Don't neglect the links given in most of the error messages either. I know most of the time they won't help anything but I've found that I often get useful hints/information from them. I make it a habit now to always look at them for any and all errors that are a problem. The services viewer mentioned earlier can come in real handy too; use it right after any error that comes up and see if there are any hints there. As for the shutdown with a window open, I don't know how that would mess things up either except that it might have been preventing a buffer which contained OTHER data from being able to write to disk before you pulled the plug. One of the final shut down tasks is to make sure all the buffers have written to disk and emptied themselves. Pull power too soon, and ... who knows that was in those buffers taht was needed? Personally I'd forget about that part and just concentrate on going forward from whever you clear the logs out. Baby-step it; one step at a time. Oh; pay particular attention to the Security log. RTM usually means "release to manufacturing" in the software world when consumer software is being created. This might be coming from Windows code. Is DCOM enabled as a service? And COM+ Event System? I don't know how to guide you to those services in Vista, but in WinXP, you configure them via Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services. Yes, I rechecked services and turned on a few others that had relationships to those two. I think I may have found the smoking gun though -- after the first failed boot on Thursday, rebooting to safe mode, then shutting down, worked. I turned off the PC again last night normally, and this morning it wouldn't boot AT ALL. Windows would start to load, but the screen was blank except for a big cursor arrow like you get in safe mode, and the cursor was moveable. I tried a hardware diagnostic scan, no problems. Tried using MS Restore, didn't seem to work, tried HP restore which wanted to take me back to the original image (no thanks!), then tried MS Restore again, this time got to the correct page for picking a system restore point. While looking at the list, I noticed that MicroSh*t had auto-updated my PC on Friday and Saturday, haven't discovered yet what they were (football is on, dude!). So I restored back to Tuesday, the day before I updated AVG8, and it rebooted ok, finally. Just got a popup for Problem Reports, re-rho..... Welp, just got some new info -- I had winbloze check for an online solution to the graphics driver error (I usually cancel those attempts because they never find any solutions) and got this, looks like the video driver may have been corrupted or made incompatible by one of those two auto-updates? Check for NVIDIA Graphics Driver updates This problem was caused by NVIDIA Graphics Driver, which was created by NVIDIA Corporation. There is no solution for this problem at this time. Troubleshooting -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A driver update, if available, might prevent this problem from recurring. There are several ways of locating and installing driver updates, but it is best to let Windows do this for you. Try the first step below, which describes the process. If it doesn't produce a driver update that solves the problem, then try the remaining steps in the order given. Check for optional third-party updates Even if all critical updates have been installed on your computer, optional updates might be available for NVIDIA Graphics Driver that have yet to be installed. Here's how to use Windows Update to check for and install optional driver updates: Open Windows Update: Windows Update In the left pane, click Check for updates to see if there are any optional updates available for your computer. If no new optional updates are available, go to step 2. If optional updates are available, click View available updates (if you do not see this option, you might have to click Check online for updates from Microsoft Update). Windows Update or Microsoft Update will list any updated drivers that are available for devices installed in your computer. What is a driver? A driver is software that allows your computer to communicate with hardware or devices. Without drivers, the hardware you connect to your computer (for example, a video card or a webcam) will not work properly. Select any optional updates that are listed (especially if they appear to be graphics related), and then click Install. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Try updating NVIDIA Graphics Driver manually If no optional PRODUCT_NAME updates were available in Windows Update, you can try updating NVIDIA Graphics Driver manually. Note It's best to let Windows install drivers for your hardware automatically, as described in step 1 above. If you decide to manually update NVIDIA Graphics Driver, here's how to do it: Click to open Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. In Device Manager, double-click Display adapters, and then double-click the name of the device running NVIDIA Graphics Driver. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver. When asked how you want to search for driver software, click Search automatically for updated driver software. Windows will locate and install a new driver if one is available. Check the NVIDIA Corporation website for driver updates If no optional NVIDIA Graphics Driver updates were available in Windows Update, go online to the following website to check for driver updates: NVIDIA Corporation How to manually update a driver using a downloaded file Click to open Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. In Device Manager, locate the device you want to update, and then double-click the device name. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver. When asked how you want to search for driver software, click Browse my computer for driver software. Click Browse, locate where you placed the new driver on your computer, click OK, and then click Next. Windows will locate and install the new driver. Note If you are running the latest version of NVIDIA Graphics Driver and are still experiencing the problem, we recommend that you contact NVIDIA Corporation or the manufacturer for additional information and support. Check your computer manufacturer's website for driver updates If NVIDIA Graphics Driver was preinstalled on your computer, check your computer manufacturer's website for driver updates. How do I find my computer manufacturer (OEM)? Click the Start button , type msinfo32 in the Search box, and then press ENTER. Your computer OEM is listed as the System Manufacturer in the right pane of the System Information window. Click to go online to see contact information for most computer manufacturers How to manually update a driver using a downloaded file Click to open Device Manager. I get an error that another service it depends on isn't running, but I re-enabled damn near every service except for a few remote connection services. This is a description of what it does, it may help my stuttering audio if I can get it to work right: "(qWave) is a networking platform for Audio Video (AV) streaming applications on IP home networks. qWave enhances AV streaming performance and reliability by ensuring network quality-of-service (QoS) for AV applications. It provides mechanisms for admission control, run time monitoring and enforcement, application feedback, and traffic prioritization." I have confirmed that I have both files needed, qwavedrv.sys and qwave.dll, but they do not load on startup, I assume because of the error. Help? Seems that a DVD copyright cracker app that I installed a month ago set something called a "lower filter" on the DVD drive, which rendered it useless, but not until my BSOD last week. Why, I dunno. In any case, I edited the reg file and deleted the offending key value and everything is peachy keen again. Except for the Qwave issue. Now the .sys file is loading, but the .dll still won't, so the "quality audio experience" is still missing. But no stuttering today on streaming audio that I could tell. And I apparently have an IRQ conflict between the audio card and a USB host controller sharing the same interrupt (IRQ 21), have to work on that some more, although system diagnostics sez there's no "problem" with them sharing the same channel. "Copyright Crack"?? 'nuff said. In my defense, when someone posts something here with "Help!" in the subject line help is usually provided in a very short time period. This time, Twayne (?) had some suggestions, but he's been MIA the last few days, as have you, Mike Easter, and others. I was left to solve my BSOD problems on my own, which as of yesterday I finally managed to do. So yeah, I was a bit peeved about the lack of usual support! Needless to say, DVD43 has been banished from my computer. I got info on a new, apparently safe, DVD copier yesterday -- "DVD Shrink". Why I didn't find it in my first search for apps I have no idea. All I want to do is rip the audio, after all, not copy the damn thing and pass it around to others for free. I *should* be able to do that without a huge hassle. The BSOD was unrelated to that app, it just showed up in the logfiles after I started examing my system. Binary content gets converted to text (in this case base64) when sent by email, and the text representation of that jpeg is all on one line and truncated at the 998th character (the maximum allowed). The cam software should be breaking the base64 into shorter lines of something in the region of 72 - 76 chars long. Ergo I need free or at least a trial. I'd use the native backup that comes with each of those languages, especially since time is short. In XP Home it's not installed by default; you have to find the .msi in I think it's added value and run it to install it. They'll all allow you to back up the whole thing, a drive or folders/files. WinZip is probably the closest thing to a free backup program, but ... it can not back up System Files since it doesn't use Shadow Copy to get file in-use. BootItNG might still be free, but you'll have a learning curve; it's not great for being intuntive last I knew. Then, drive clone utils are often available from the drive vendors I've heard, but don't know for sure. Even for a paid prog, unless you already know it, you'd need more than one and each will have its learning curve. Norton's free trial is 15 days I think, & Acronis' might be 30 day's; you'll have to check it. Either of those would work great, they image, and work great, but take a bit to get used to. Don't know how many versions you'd need for different OS's . XP and 98 usually take different versions; Vista I don't know for sureis covered yet, definitely not in the freebie stuff I'd say, but you'll have to check. If you use Norton or Acronis, be sure to burn the Recovery CD ISO. You can download them so delivery is fast. Well, NOrton you can, assume you can with Acronis; don't know for sure. Then again there's always xcopy and XXCopy (xxcopy.com) but a definite learning curve & they don't do files in-use. But if it's only data, they would work fine. XXCopy is free. Personally I'd use the native backup software in your case, or the latest free or pay rev of WinZip. WinZip has the best compression ratings. The native backups work fine, regardless of what anyone else says and do all you would need for the recovery, including starting from a naked disk. Don't forget to make the ASR floppies, just in case there is no original CD for the OS by that time. I know at work we backed up a new machine (Diag, C and D partitions), reconfigured the RAID (it was shipped wrong) and restored both partitions all in less than 30 minutes. I have used it on XP, Vista, and Linux with no problems. And it worked welll enough that I actually paid for it :) On the other hand, I have had major problems using NT Backup with new drives because it does not recreate the diag partition then all the partition numbers were wrong and the machine would not boot. Ended up needing to rebuild the OS and applications then restore the backup to an alternate directory to just get the data back. I use SyncBack (also recommended by Ian) to back up individual files (email, bookmarks, images, etc) to an external drive. I then use Acronis to copy the entire partition. SyncBack could then be used for the quick restore of a single file. Acronis in case of a system or hardware issue. Any chance you recall what any of the filenames were? I seem to recall running into that before but my mind is telling me it was Avira AV software causing it, something you've probably never even heard of; it's German. I do recall they were strange files for a backup to hiccup on but I can't find my notes on that machine right now. Ghost had no problem with them but I didn't try any others. Not to ba a killjoy, and nothing that says Acronis will fail, but IMO you're making a huge mistake by not having tested an emergency recovery somehow. When the emergency occurs is not the time to discover something forgotten, missed, or corrupted. One of my reasons for piping in here is that 3 hours to back up a 40 Gig drive to a USB drive is really a very long time. Even a Full backup with verification of my 40 Gig boot partition and its attendant data takes a lot less than half that amount of time and incrementals are in the order of ten minutes. Obviously there are a lot of dependencies as to how long it would take, but ... that seems extreme, IMO, compared to my own experiences. IMO a good schedule is a full backup once a month, and incrementals in between, plus burn to DVD sets whenever anything substantial has changed on the drive. I certainly wouldn't recommend restoring your production drive as a test, but I'd be sorely tempted to Restore to say a partition I made on the USB drive at least, unless I had a spare drive laying around I could use, in which case I'd restore to the hard drive. Caveat: The drive being restored to cannot be smaller than the imaged drive was, meaning 40 Gig in your case. Oh, sorry; I'm running Ghost 14, not Acronis; should have put that first I guess, but everything I said still applies. Maybe it's just my system, but when I did something like click the checkbox to unselect the Windows directory it took forever to complete the request, I even got a "program not responding" error, but patience and waiting allowed it to mark all the subdirectories as "not to be backed up". And I just happened to stumble upon the saved profile list, I had no idea how to pull that up -- using the "load profile" command kinda worked, but the window was hidden. Dumb GUI. Simply copying the wanted backup directories using windows explorer is WAY faster and easier, but then again it doesn't transfer alot of the installation/user profile stuff. I just haven't had the time to acquire a second USB hard drive and try a restore. I did however, pick up a 120gb hard drive on sale several weeks ago. It'll be the candidate to attempt a swap and the restore procedure one of the weekends when I get several hours to play. All in good time. I think it's a 3 hour backup. I do not recall the exact time. My 40gb drive is about 75% full. Next backup, which I should do this weekend, I'll time and report back. And for cost, I got Acronis free after rebate(s) from Fry's. You are right about this - I have a set of directories for a rollout script, which has a huge number of nested directories - each time I update the scripts I duplicate them again - it can take ages to parse them all. It does, however, have the advantage that you can set the old directories to be excluded for the backup, but new ones will be added automatically to be backed-up as you create them. > > Simply copying the wanted backup directories using windows explorer is > WAY faster and easier, but then again it doesn't transfer alot of the > installation/user profile stuff. Assuming you mean Ghost 14: $49 seems to be the going rate, and what I paid, as a matter of fact, because I caught it during their "upgrade" offer. I'd carefully check out the small print for the $30 offers though. Make sure the ISO file, documentation, stuff like that is all provided. And if you're looking at old Ghost version, stay away from version 10 & 11. They encompass the period of switchover from PQ to Symantec; documentation was dismal and I think it's rev 10 that had a bad habit of borking images during a Restore. They really stumbed, hard, during the switchover. They seem to have recovered nicely now and I really like version 14 for all its handy bells & whistles not to mention stability and reliability. The way the prices are rising though, this could be the last version of Ghost for me if I decide I have to move ahead to something better. or worse MS forces me to somehow. I figure I'm good for about 5 years or until I get myself free of MS's planned obsolescence and single source mindset. It's still scary to not have verified the first several backups until you're certain everything is working well. Also, a verification does nothing to insure that the whole Restore function works; it just verifies what was written, but nothing about the opposite direction. I always use verification except for the occasional times I might run an unscheduled backup; then I turn it off just to save a little time. I shouldn't, I know, but when I'm sitting at the computer while it's running I usually want it to get over with as fast as it can. The scheduled backups all happen at night so who cares if they take a few minutes longer? BTW, multiple previous full backups won't help much if a verification process would have exposed problems in each one of those; as in, all from the same source, wahtever it might have been. In other words, it's no protection against a bad verify. Well, copying my whole damn C: drive would be wasting a whole lot of disk space on my external drive -- so many files that don't need to be copied and can't be restored properly anyway (windows system files, for instance). And if you weren't careful to clean up all the garbage/junk/temp files on your PC first you could end up copying 200+ MB of junk, what a waste of disk space! My backup of my 40gb drive took about 45 mins. Acronis turns the 40gb into about 5 .tib files. Doing the verification procedure, I'm not certain if the entire backup was verified, as the procedure only starts after you select a single .tib file. The verification of that file took 25 minutes. I guess a full verificaiton would take 5x that. AndrewB AndrewB wrote: > > Oh, yes, I'm aware that an untested restore procedure is risky. A lot of the tweaks involve directly editing the registry file, so of course backup the reg file before you start optimizing your system. I spent half the day Saturday perusing that website and editing my reg file, no problems with any of the hacks (so far ;-) I managed to find a piece of freeware on that site that _finally_ enabled me to view my dual-CPU temps (CoreTemp). Nothing else I've tried, even SiSandra, was able to read my built in temp sensors, I dunno why. http://www.howtogeek.com/tag/windows-vista/ Another useful site I found for changing your TCP/IP settings to improve your system operation is: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=2574 Be careful with the TCP Chimney Offload setting though, not all NIC cards support it. Mine was set to disabled, I changed it to enabled, but I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to find out _exactly_ what Ethernet hardware device my PC is using (it's built in to the MoBo, it's not a separate card) so I ran "netsh int tcp set global chimney=default" and it changed back to being disabled, so I guess my board doesn't support it. Have fun! If you've ever had to jump thru all those multiple hoops required to take ownership over a file so you could do something with it (modify or delete, for instance), you will absolutely LOVE this time saving app: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/ From nobody at devnull.spamcop.net Mon Sep 22 22:23:09 2008 From: nobody at devnull.spamcop.net (Twayne) Date: Mon Sep 22 22:25:03 2008 Subject: [Scgeeks] Re: Acronis True Image 11 - Any user experiences References: Message-ID: Not sure what tib files are, but 45 minutes sounds a lot better. After some initial snafus, I got it wired properly and working perfectly (until now). I used 3.5 mm jacks with solder connections to create the cable, and was extremely careful to cover both the hot terminal and the ground shield with black electrical tape to prevent any shorts in the jacks. Yesterday while doing laundry in the basement, I turned on the stereo to listen to some computer audio. I heard this horrible humming noise coming out of the speakers, and the intensity (loudness) of the humming changed drastically when I jiggled the input line from the PC, _and_ when I moved close to or away from the stereo itself! After some fiddling, I discovered that I had used non-grounding converter connectors to plug in my basement PC and monitor (which is a foot away from the stereo) into a two-wire extension cord that was plugged into the same surge protector that the stereo was plugged into -- figuring that I had a ground loop problem, I ditched the converters, found a proper 3-line cord, and plugged the PC back in. Problem solved, right? Nope. Still just as bad. Then I realized that while the PC was unplugged from the power strip, the interference on the PC audio line-in disappeared. So I plugged/unplugged the PC extension cord several times and confirmed that with it disconnected the signal noise wasn't there. Now I'm really stumped! That PC was _never_ powered on since I initially set it up to record audio from my LP player, and there was no interference for months until yesterday. I checked the LP player ground wire and it was nice and tight on the back of the stereo (I didn't check it at the player itself, I'm pretty sure it's hardwired there). What the hell changed and/or happened overnight that could cause this problem?
