My experience with HP has been good; I have a MediaCenter rather than a
Pavilion, but HP has been helpful and cooperative when I've needed it.

I believe that the Pavilion is one of the HP lines from HP-pre-Compaq
takeover, so you should be OK - but I would NOT get anything that has
the Compaq brand name on it; the two support organizations are still
separate, and the Compaq organization would be charitably described as
"suboptimal" and "inadequate".

It should be noted that HP appears to have a bad habit of preloading the
box with lots of should-be-considered-unnecessary stuff, much of it demo
versions that you have to subscribe to services for or purchase a
license to in order to use them fully. Compaq does, too, but less so, to
my perception.

It's becoming increasingly common to provide the "restore" materials as
a partition on the disk, with a programmed option to build CDs or DVDs
to use if the HD craps out; HP does this. It's a practice I don't like,
but...
