Win 3.x, 95, 98 and ME are all basically a fancy extension to some
version of MS-DOS (which is the underlying operating system).
NT, which started with NT 3.0, is a completely different OS. It is
not built upon MS-DOS. I belive the original idea was the W9x line
was for home users but NT was for servers and corporates. Then MS
decided that everyone would use NT and the W9x development was
stopped.
The branding of NT versions is as follows:
NT 5.0 = Win 2000
NT 5.1 = XP
NT 5.2 = Win 2003 server
NT 6.0 = Vista

NTFS is the file system for NT that replaced FAT on MS-DOS but you can
still operate with FAT on NT. I run Win2k on FAT 32.
