How much stuff do you have?  :)  Sounds like a small CompUSA (RIP) of 
sorts. heh

A disturbing trend began occurring several years ago when hardware 
accessories started having less hardware (reduced cost) but a larger 
software component portion.  That also allows for software to be updated 
for issues.  But the drawback is of that you mentioned above - forward 
porting functional hardware to future versions of Windows.

I tend not to go for the low end hardware for this specific reason. 
I've also had good luck when hardware claims both Mac and Windows 
compatibility.
